SQUUUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I GOT THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!

Heavens knows how as the only good things which could be said about the interview were I looked grown-up in my pencil skirt and fitted shirt, and managed to sit in a v. lady-like fashion through out the whole thing.

Artificial pancreas a step closer?

This is very interesting:
"Scientists in Cambridge say they are moving a step closer to developing an artificial pancreas for people with diabetes."

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson

I wasn't going to do a post on Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it seemed too intrusive, however, inspired by the funny, moving remembrance of OperaChic.

Ciao Lorraine

There are two role models in my life- women in entirely different fields who inspire me because of their integrity, commitment, bravery and honesty. one was Lorraine, the other is my PhD supervisor. One I never even met, the other I've been attached to for almost four years, yet both have been huge influences on my work.

Thank you Lorraine for the beauty of your voice, and the inspiration you gave to so many people.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I have an interview for the job working on a disease I can't spell or pronounce. The interview is with two heads of group at the hospital and obviously there is a need to appear professional, coherent and intelligent. Hmmmmm, yes, oh dear.

And did I mention the interview is the same week my thesis is due.

b*gger.

*whimper*

That small squeak of terror coming over from the north east coast of Scotland would be me after handing in my first ever proper job application. Postdoctoral RA in human genetics, working on stuff I can't pronounce or spell. Yay!
Not trusting Royal Mail or the internal post a trot down the hill to the main campus was required. Trying not to look too rabbit in the headlights (that would be why I get called Mopsy) at handing the forms and cvs over to a bored looking assistant was not the most fun. However, emerging fro the registry to find is was Graduation improved my day. Why? University Graduation at Scottish universities means many many men in kilts and there is nothing more attractive than men in kilts.
Lets just ignore that most of them are about 5 years younger than me.....

Frakking Tubulin

Writers block has hit. There must have been a reason to look at tubulin during motility but I'm b*ggered if I can remember what it was. This is what happens when actin cytoskeletal biologists start messing around with the microtubule network- no good can ever come of such a thing.

However, in good news the head of our unit is on the bbc, again:

One more for the cutting file.

Post-Grad symposium, ouch

Weekend after the PG symposium and I remember why I gave up drinking, dear God the pain.

The day was a great success though, we ran to time, our Third year and Second year did very well-answered their questions without going rabbit in the headlights. AND I finally got a decent photo of my research group (it's only taken 4 years).

Back to the proof-reading.

Easter Sunday!

Happy Easter- Lent is over, thank fook.

Went round to LabBestMates for Dr Who and countdown to Easter Sunday- cue me listening to Radio 4 at 11.45 while the others were engrossed in "The Prestige". Big Ben never sounded sweeter. Then after a slightly p*ssed egg hunt (clues do not make sense after lots of whisky) flatmate and I toddled off home to admire our chocolate stash.

Easter and other holidays usually mean going home to my family and all the nightmare arguments which always, always happen. So it was nice to have a relaxing weekend with people who like each other and want to be in the same room.

Now to cope with the hangover, some bacon with diet irn bru-brewed in Scotland from girders- roll those rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr's. Kate Adie "From our Own correspondent" streaming before a bank holiday craptacular film and possible my beloved Lorraine Hunt Lieberson Avie cd while cooking dinner for the boys.

Mopsy heaven.

A less than sucky day

So, my first ever blog post- apologies for the general air of naivety

Why was today less than sucky?

  1. An experiment which I really needed to work did-not ground breaking but essential thesis fodder.
  2. I won the Easter Egg Hunt therefore getting the largest egg I have ever seen- oh foolish people who thought they could come between a chocolate starved Mopsy and her prey.
  3. Only two more days till Lent is over and I can finally dive head first into my chocolate stash.

That is about it-doesn't really take much to make me happy .
